Chimpanzee
Order :
Primate
Family: Pongidae
Genus: Pan
Species: troglodytes
Location: Found
in Western and Central Africa from
Senegal to Tanzania. Humid forest, deciduous woodland or mixed
savanna; presence in open areas depends on access to evergreen
fruit-producing forest. Found from sea level to 6500 feet.
Diet:
Chimps feed on fruit and young leaves. Animal prey
makes up as much as five percent of the diet, with social
insects, such as ants and termites, providing the largest
amounts. Feeding is essentially an individual
activity, but after a cooperative hunt may share morsels in
response to begging by others.
Social Behavior:
Chimp communities are made up of 15 to 120 animals.
Chimps spend much time grooming each other. They
form a loose dominance hierarchy
Interesting Facts:
Cheetah (Mike) was one of the first chimps featured in the TARZAN
movies in the
early 1930s. He was acquired from the Weismuller estate
in the 1950s and is a happy active member of our primate group
even though he is now in his early 70s.
Status in Wild: Chimpanzees are
a possible endangered species on the IUCN Red List.
