Capuchin Monkey
Order : Primate
Family: Cebidae
Genus: Cebus
Species: Cebus apella
Location: Found
in northwestern South America. They only come down to
the ground to drink. Each group has its own home range that
covers a large area. The members of a group move about in
search of the best food and keep in contact with each other by
calling. To help their sense of direction and mark their
territory, capuchin monkeys soak their feet and hands in urine
and then leave a scent on the leaves as they move.
Diet: They feed on fruit,
insects, leaves, and small birds, and possibly on small
mammals.
Social Behavior:
Capuchins live in large groups hidden in the trees in thick forests
Interesting Facts:
Jake was a former pet who came to the Sanctuary overweight and had
to be slowly weaned into a larger enclosure. He is now a
healthy, happy Capuchin and is loved by his caretakers!
Capuchins are often referred to as 'organ grinder monkeys' and
are frequently trained as helpers for handicapped people.
Status in Wild: Capuchins
are listed as Lower Risk by the IUCN Red List.
